Daikon is a root vegetable reported to have originated in the Mediterranean and brought to China for cultivation around 500 B.C. Roots are large, often 2 to 4 inches in diameter and 6 to 20 inches long. Very easy to grow. The flavor is mild compared to other radishes and looks more like a carrot. Daikon has high water content and is very low in calories. It is rich in vitamin C, potassium and folate and a good source of magnesium. The leaves contain beta-carotene, calcium and iron besides vitamin C.
Eggplant Seeds - Thai Round. Heirloom, Solanum melongena. NonGMO. 55-60 days. Warm season annual. This disease resistant matti gulla variety adapts well to many growing conditions. Matti is an Indian village famous for this type of eggplant. The very productive plant produces small round green-skinned fruits with white stripes that grow to 2 in diameter and up to 2 ounces. It is very popular in cuisines of India, Thailand, and Vietnam. Start seeds inside 6 weeks before last frost date (or 8 weeks before expected transplanting date). Keep soil warm until emergence (80-90?F minimum). Seeds will not germinate in cool soil and planting out too early may affect plant vigor. Harden off plants carefully before transplanting. Thai Jicama Seeds. Pachyrhizus erosus. Heirloom, Non-GMO, Open Pollinated. Annual. About 150 Days to full maturity. Also known as ?yam bean?, and 'true jicama'. This Thai variety produces larger fruits than it's popular Mexican cousin, Mexican Jicama. This tuber has crisp, sweet white flesh, and light brown skin. With a long, hot season it can grow 4-6 diameter and 4-5 lbs in weight. More temperate climates will produce smaller roots. Tubers develop after flowering and store well. Ripe pods and leaves are poisonous. Start seeds inside 8-10 weeks before last frost date. Keep soil warm until emergence. Seeds will not germinate in cool soil. Harden off plants carefully before transplanting. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil at least 20" deep. Shiso also known as Perilla or Beefsteak plant is a nice addition to the herb garden. At one to three feet tall and only about one foot wide its complicated flavor could become a new favorite without needing too much space. It can also be grown as a microgreen. Chirimen Winter Squash Seeds. 100 days to maturity. Cucurbita moschata. Non-GMO, Heirloom, Annual. Chirimen is a traditional kabocha squash, dento yasai, of Japan. This tasty variety of Japanese pumpkin forms a flat globe with distinct ribs and warts (resembles cauliflower) that can reach 8 in diameter. The dark green skin matures to a buff color. Creamy yellow, moist thick flesh has a sweet and nutty flavor. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in spring/summer after last frost in a warm, sunny location. The tender green leaves are rounded with slightly scalloped edges and are used still attached to the contrasting stem. This hybrid was developed to use as a baby leaf green.
