Kyona mizuna variety name originated in the Kyoto area and was a type commonly grown in this region. Ours was selected from this type and is considered a Kyoto or Kyona type. It has long slender stems and dark green, serrated leaves. Both cold and heat tolerant and slow to bolt, it is a vigorous green that branches prolifically. Suitable for harvesting at any stage, microgreens to mature plants. Cut-and-grow-again methods apply to this vegetable. Mizuna has become very popular as a salad green and is also delicious cooked. Prefers mild and cool temperatures. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in spring/summer after last frost or late summer/early fall. Avoid hot summer planting for best results. Sow every 2 weeks for continuous harvest. Keeping soil moist is crucial. Fertilize as needed. Excellent for sukiyaki, shabu shabu, yosenabe, ohitashi, hariharinabe, pickling, and salads.
