Mustard Seeds - Kekkyu Takana. Heirloom, Brassica juncea var rugosa. Alt names: aba kola, bao xin da jie cai, bao xin kai tsai, cai xanh, Chinese mustard, gat, heading mustard, kekkyu takana, moster, mustasa, phakkaat khieo, rai, sawi, sawi hijau, sawi sawi, wrapped heart mustard, yeh choi. 55 days to maturity. Non GMO. Cool season annual. This is a heading mustard or wrapped heart mustard. In cold weather, this mustard forms a small head with a tightly wrapped core. The vigorous plants are high yielding and easy to grow. A tasty variety that is very popular in Taiwan and southern China. Heading mustard requires cool temperature for heads to form. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in late summer/early fall. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. The flavor is best when grown briskly so plant in fertile soil and keep well watered. Squash Seeds - Japanese, Winter - Tetsukabuto - Hybrid. Non-GMO. Cucurbita maxima X Cucurbita moschata. 95-105 days (45-50 days after flowering). Warm season annual. This Japanese winter squash hybrid produces nearly round fruit. Fruit weigh between 4.4 to 5.5 lbs. Under the dark black-green mottled skin, the firm flesh is a deep yellow orange color with an excellent sweet, nutty flavor. This vine grower does require a pollinator such as Delica. This variety may be used as a rootstock for grafting watermelon, melon and cucumber to prevent diseases. Tetsukabuto will resist the squash vine borer. Tetsukabuto squash store well and are very popular for use in curries and tempura. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in spring/summer after last frost in a warm, sunny location. Hill planting: Form soil into a 1-ft. diameter mound 3-4 tall. Space mounds 5-10' apart. On each mound plant 1-2 seeds. Row planting: See spacing info in chart. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Hand pollination may be necessary. The vine can be trained to climb a vertical support for better air circulation and ease of harvest or left to sprawl on the ground. Shiso also known as Perilla or Beefsteak plant is a nice addition to the herb garden. At one to three feet tall and only about one foot wide its complicated flavor could become a new favorite without needing too much space. It can also be grown as a microgreen. The flavor is somewhere between mint and basil with hints of anise and cinnamon. It can be used as a sushi wrap, as a garnish or in a fruit or green salad. The purple shiso is used in pickling to add a violet hue. Whether you choose the green or purple, this is a plant that lends itself to culinary creativity. Non-GMO. Full maturity in 60-85 Days. Melon Seeds - Hakucho - Hybrid. Non-GMO. Cucumis melo. Also known as charantais melon, makuwauri, meron. 65 days after flowering. Warm season annual. The flesh of this French Charantais melon from Japan is salmon orange color. Aromatic, sweet and just over 1 pound, Hakucho is a superior melon. The oval shaped fruit has yellowish gray skin with no netting. Sugar content has 16% brix. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in late spring/early summer after last frost in a warm, sunny location. Soil temperatures below 50?F can slow growth. Consider using black plastic and fabric row covers to speed soil warming. Sandy or light textured soils that warm quickly in spring are best.
