Squash Seeds - Japanese, Winter - Hokkori - Hybrid. Non-GMO. Cucurbita maxima. Alt names bi, bi ro, fak thong, ho bak, Japanese pumpkin, Japanese squash, kabocha, kaddu, kalabasa, labu manis, labu merak, nam gua, nam kwa, nan gua, rata labu, vilayati kaddu, waluh. 45 days to maturity after flowering, 95-110 days to maturity. Warm season annual. One of the best tasting kabocha squashes, this ebisu type is very popular in the Tokyo region. The globe shaped 3-3.5 lbs. fruits have dry and sweet deep-yellow flesh with dark green skin. Each vine yields 3-4 very uniform fruits. Has good shelf life. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in spring/summer after last frost in a warm, sunny location. Hill planting: Form soil into a 1-ft. diameter mound 3-4 tall. Space mounds 5-10' apart. On each mound plant 1-2 seeds. Chinese Cabbage Seeds - Yuki - Hybrid. Non-GMO. Brassica rapa var pekinensis. 67 days. Cool season annual. Yuki is a medium maturing variety. It has good uniformity and large head size with tolerance to Black Speck, tipburn and intermediate resistance to some races of Clubroot. Moderate bolting tolerance. Nice green exterior color. This variety is bred for spring to early summer harvest in areas where bolting is a problem. It also grows well as a late summer to early winter crop where no frost occurs. Timing on spring and fall plantings should be trialed as changing (increasing or decreasing) daylength can be a trigger for bolting. Prepare fertile well drained soil. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Exposing plants to frost or prolonged temperatures below 50?F may result in bolting. Note: Chinese Cabbage requires vernalization. Bud differentiation and bolting results from low temperatures of 41?F for a week or 50?F for two weeks. For spring harvest, transplant seedlings with 5-7 true leaves raised at 73-75?F during the day and over 53?F at night. Mustard Seeds - Red Komatsuna - Hybrid. Non-GMO. Annual. Brassica rapa var. perviridis. 20-38 days for baby leaf. Cool season. This spinach mustard hybrid is an excellent choice for baby leaf greens. It can also be used for microgreens. The leaf coloring is distinct-- purplish-red on the top and green with red veins underneath. The tender leaves are round and relatively flat, growing uniformly from bright green upright stems. This variety tolerates heat and will retain its deep purple color. Prefers mild and cool temperatures. Prepare fertile, well drained soil. Sow seeds in late spring/early summer after last frost or late summer/early fall. Avoid hot summer planting for best results. The round stalk of this variety grows curly, crispy leaves that are serrated on the edges. The leaves grow spicier and hotter as the plant matures. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in early/late spring or late summer/early fall in a sunny location. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Plant every 2 weeks for continuous harvest. Sesame Seeeds - White - Shirogoma. Heirloom, Non-GMO. Annual. Sesame indicum. Alt names chih ma, linga, ngaa, shirogoma, shiro sesame, thala atta, til, wijen. 85 days. White sesame seed is easy to grow and delicious roasted. This tropical plant likes long hot summers. Typically, seeds are roasted before using and then used whole, crushed or ground. Korean cooking makes use of sesame seeds, especially in soups and as a dressing for lightly cooked vegetables. Start seeds inside 6 weeks before last frost date. Transplant outside 1 month after last frost date. Or direct seed into warm, fertile, and well-drained soil. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Harvest ripe seedpods when the tips split. Dry thoroughly on a tray or rack. Open pods, harvest seed, and refrigerate in an airtight container. Alt names: bai gua, cai gua, Chinese white cucumber, oshiro uri, pickling melon, tsit kwa, uet kwa, yue gue. 70 days. Warm season annual. This light green, oval-shaped melon, oshiro uri, is very popular in Japan and is best suited for pickling. The fruits have crisp white flesh and can reach 14 long and 4-5" in diameter. Eggplant Seeds - Mizuno Takumi - Hybrid.Solanum melongena. 80 days. NonGMO. Warm season annual. This shiny, purplish-black oval-shaped eggplant grows to a plump 1/2 pound. Known for its watery flesh and tender skin, it is most often enjoyed cooked or pickled. The plants are heavy producers in open field or greenhouse alike. Start seeds inside 6 weeks before last frost date (or 8 weeks before expected transplanting date). Keep soil warm until emergence (80-90?F minimum). Seeds will not germinate in cool soil and planting out too early may affect plant vigor. Harden off plants carefully before transplanting. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Transplant in late spring/ summer (soil temperatures at least above 75?F) in a very warm and sunny location. Eggplants are heavy feeders so use a balanced fertilizer. Too much nitrogen will produce lush foliage and few fruit. Sow seeds indoors in cooler climates, and outdoors after the final frost in climates with a warm spring. Plant seeds a quarter inch deep in well drained soil. These plants can help keep flies and other insects out of the garden. Using fertilizer can help promote growth. Leaves are ready for harvest after around 85 days, and can be picked off the plant, rinsed, and used in dishes. Their sweet unique taste makes a great addition to sauces, and can flavor meats and vegetables. They also make great pesto.
